5 of our favourite interior trends from The Block 2021

With The Block wrapped up for another year, we thought we’d dive into some of our favourite interior trends that popped up this season. No drama, no tears, just pure interiors talk.

Boucle furniture

When Ronnie and Georgia covered their lounge in sumptuous cream bouclé, judge Shaynna Blaze fell deeply, calling it the fabric of the moment. And she’s not wrong. Abundant in texture, bouclé (meaning curl in French) comprises of lengths of woollen loops of similar size. The durable fabric makes for an easy way to add texture, visual interest and luxury, pairing beautifully with curvilinear shapes like seats, ottomans and decorative cushions. We’re definitely suckers for a good cream boucle armchair, and can’t see craze going away anytime soon

Skylights

Rooftop windows – or skylights – are ever increasing in popularity. We can’t think of one house on The Block that didn’t utilise skylights. They’re great at illuminating a space naturally, and can solve certain issues in stuffy, cold or dark rooms. They can even have the added benefit of opening up a view of the treetops or a serene skyscape. And with so much time spent indoors, that extra indoor-outdoor connection is a must. Just be mindful of solar heat when working out placement.

Scalloped wall panelling

Walls are one of those areas that can often get overlooked in an interior makeover or renovation. People often make the mistake of thinking that a coat of paint is the only thing required to dress up a wall. If there’s one thing you remember today, it’s dress up your walls! And while a statement art piece can be the perfect go-to, what about sprucing it up with wall panelling? A contemporary take on VJ panelling, Ronnie and Georgia's use of scalloped wall linings consistently impressed The Block, and we can see why. Not to mention wall panelling can also help with sound insulation – it’s a win-win!

Exotic bathrooms

With lockdowns and travel restrictions a part of daily life, we can see why the exotic bathroom trend is booming. Accented with earthy tiles and feature sinks and fixtures, Tanya and Vito’s bathroom reflected the far-off beauty of a Moroccan-style spa. Combining wood and ceramic features for warmth and stylised accessories for visual allure, they created a luxurious bathroom that would appeal to the masses. Just keep in mind that there’s a clear divide between “exotic luxury” and “tacky theme”.

Statement front door

First impressions count – and no façade would be complete without a fabulous front door to boot. A front door does more than create kerb appeal or protect from the elements – it also gives you a hint of what lies within. Residential homes are now moving beyond simple timber or painted doors, with much inspiration being drawn from commercial and hospitality fit-outs. Glass doors proved very popular on this year’s show, with three out of five contestants utilising them in their designs. And while the material choice is a very modern one, privacy should be a factor to consider – unless of course you don’t mind the occasional peek-in!
