May feels straight from Milan Design Week
This month’s feels come to you from one of the edgiest events in the world of design; that is the Milan Design Week 2019, or Salone del Mobile, as they say in Italian.
The fair transforms the city into an exhilarating array of events and exhibitions premiering the latest design trends for the forthcoming year, while luxurious furniture designers introduce their new collections.
Ekstrem armchair by Terje Ekstrom for Varier Furniture
A throwback to the eccentric 80s, the unexpected geometrics of the Ekstrem armchair allow you to sit forward with feet on the ground, sideways with legs calmly placed on the armrests, or completely backwards with the front of the torso against the chair’s back. The open framework of fabric-covered foam over a steel frame provides an unparalleled level of comfort as well as an extraordinarily eye-catching piece of furniture.
Klorofyll planter by Anderssen & Voll for Elementa Oslo
Conceived in natural or grey terracotta, the Klorofyll planter range is designed to provide a complete toolkit for interior design with plants. With a mix of both conventional sized flowerpots and a series of large scale planters supported by metal stands, these planters are bound to add warmth and natural texture to any interior – or exterior.
Cirque collection by Giopato Coombes
Inspired by the festive shapes and figures of a circus, the slender thread-like structures of brushed brass change form to create infinite geometric compositions, while capsules of ribbed glass project continuous light.
Elephant console by Bernhardt Vella for Mingardo
The console table that forces you to rethink the natural perception of domestic spaces. Its polished dark tubular metal legs stand together with gold detailing, creating a luxurious industrial feel against the softer veined marble top in black and cream.
Fordite carpet by Patricia Urquiola for Cc-tapis
Inspired by a by-product of the car manufacturing industry, these stunning carpets are aptly named. Like the multicoloured stratum of enamel automotive paint that is then baked and polished until it resembles a jewel, these rugs utilise Himalayan wool, pure silk and aloe left over from cc-tapis’s regular production process. The rugs maintain the same layered appearance as Fordite, recreated with recycled wool and accented with lurex threads.
Cyclop stools designed by Tron Meyer for Norwegian Presence
Named after the circular ‘eye’ that is created through the use of circular holes, these Cyclop stools mirror the shape of the chair’s seat and the matching table’s surface. The distinct aesthetic is completed by an understated but luxurious trifecta of anodised aluminium, larvikite and Norwegian pine.
Loggia side table by Matteo Leorato for Portego Design
Carefully constructed from natural marble and resin grit, the Loggia side table reinterprets terrazzo in the third dimension – a material traditionally reserved for the paving of noble palaces in the Renaissance period. Fittingly, it is naturally polished with no synthetic film added.
ExCinere tiles by Formafantasma for Dzek Dzek Dzek
The result of more than three years of research and experimentation, ExCinere is a refined collection of volcanic-ash-glazed tiles evocative of the dynamic landscape from which they come. Available in two sizes and five volcanic-ash-glazes, these exquisite tiles are suitable for both interior and exterior surfaces, from kitchen counters and bathroom floors to architectural facade cladding.
DL lounge chair by Dion Lee and Gibson Karlo for Design By Them
Taking inspiration from Dion Lee’s signature weaving techniques, the DL Lounge Chair by Australian fashion designer Dion Lee and Gibson Karlo combines organic materials and angular silhouettes with the use of Italian saddle leather tensioned over a steel frame to construct a fluid yet geometric form.
