July highlight: 7 local creative crushes
Our homes are increasingly filled with mass produced items. While there is a place for these things in our interiors, unique art and limited pieces add personality and life to a home. This is why we’re kicking off July with a (non-exhaustive) list of some of our favourite creatives from down under. These are the some uber talented people and brands whose works we absolutely adore and use in many of our projects.
Torquay-based artist Kate Mayes draws inspiration from nature to create her bold and colourful artworks.
“My work is a collaboration between figurative and abstract botanical foliage and the use of shapes, lines and colours. I have no plans when I begin to paint, I just start – usually with a leaf and it’s finished when it’s finished. I don’t overthink it – the canvas speaks to me and tells me when it’s time for tools down,” says Kate.
We say, keep listening to your intuition Kate, because we’re swooning over your artworks!
These guys have been around since the mid 80s, and we can see why their works remain as popular as ever. Propelled by a philosophy of colour and form, co-founders Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy work with glass, sterling silver and resin to produce exquisite handmade pieces. Highlights include asymmetric plates, shallow dishes and elegant vases in a rainbow of serene marble-effect palettes.
Pattern, colour and composition all work together to present a snippet of an emotional narrative in the artworks of Brisbane-based Beth Kennedy. Her work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across Australia, displaying a sustained process of transcription from sketches, to watercolour and then paint on canvas. She works intuitively with colour, at times allowing it to flow across the canvas in washes, and at others using it in bold opaque area.
With decades of experience as an award winning fashion photographer for the likes of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Vogue (to name a few), Andrew Vukosav’s latest project fuses his love of piloting with his exceptional photographic talent. The result are a spectacular collection of large scale art-photographs showcasing the immense variety, beauty and uniqueness of Australia as seen from the air.
Hailing from Sydney, artist Angus Martin uses his craft to capture the feelings that arise from love and relationships, relying on fragmented shapes to piece together cohesive forms. With a focus on the psychology behind colours, Angus balances dark and bright shades to strengthen the impact of his work and evoke emotions from his audience. We love working with artists like Angus Martin to bring beautiful pieces into our clients’ homes while also supporting local talent.
